Golden Heritage Homes Ends 20 Years of No Development
In Rising Norfolk Neighborhood
November 18, 2005
VIRGINIA BEACH, VA, November 18, 2005 -- A new housing
development by Golden Heritage Homes that broke ground
today in Norfolk could become a model for affordable housing
throughout Hampton Roads.
Norfolk City Councilman Anthony Burfoot and developer
Don Weeks of Golden Heritage Homes officially broke ground
this morning on the new community called Cape Henry of
Norfolk.
Weeks is making it a priority that the new, affordable
homes are certified as energy efficient. "Housing
that’s affordable at purchase but wasteful in
energy isn’t very affordable," he said. "Savings
in mortgage payments shouldn’t go straight
to energy bills."
Burfoot said he was elated about the project, which
ends "20 years of no development" in the
neighborhood.
The homes will be independently verified to be energy
efficient in use of heating, cooling and hot water
energy.
The development, comprised on about 29 single-family
homes, is scheduled for completion in mid-2007. The
development features 1,400 - 1,700 square foot homes
on 5,000 square foot lots priced between $195,000
-
225,000. Norfolk’s average new home price is
$280,000.
"With only 46% of Norfolk residents owning their
homes, developments like this will hopefully improve
that number," said Weeks.
